About Ms. Kara
Kara Finley has been nurturing the love of reading in children since 2001, guided by her belief in the unique potential of every young learner. With a foundation in the Orton-Gillingham method, her approach to teaching reading and phonics has reached hundreds of students over 20 years, marking a journey filled with learning, growth, and connection.
Her love of teaching reading started with time spent as a student teacher in New Zealand. The beautiful whole language curriculum inspired a genuine love of reading and writing in her students. After earning her teaching degree from Kent State University, she returned those practices to the classroom. She realized that many of her students could not learn to read or write without direct, systematic instruction.
Ms. Kara taught reading across multiple levels and spent two years as a Literacy/Curriculum Facilitator before starting her Orton-Gillingham journey. For the last 20 years, she has been providing private reading instruction. Ms.Kara sees students in “The Reading Cottage”, within local schools and via Zoom, adapting to the changing landscapes of education and ensuring that distance is no barrier to learning. In every lesson, Kara brings her expertise and passion for teaching, aiming to make a significant difference in her students' lives. Her work reflects a strong dedication to education and the belief that every child, regardless of their challenges, can embrace the joy of reading.
